Trains Not Freeways A new national campaign has begun to involve elected officials in transportation, environmental and energy issues: Trains Not Freeways (TNF). TNF spells relief for commuters tired of traffic jams, crashes, smog and costly car expenses. With the passage of the TEA-21 (see story this page), it is vital to fight more paving on all levels. TNF can, among other things, help assure green options are adopted when local choices are made on transportation projects with TEA-21 flexibility.. The world knows it's much easier to live free of cars once valid alternatives present themselves-countless examples make the point. This inspires our work to join with others in demanding a real commitment to viable mass transit. Honest science has recognized that world oil demand will surpass supply in the coming years: rather than let this new and more permanent energy crisis surprise us, it would be more reasonable to be prepared for it. To this end, the Alliance for a Paving Moratorium has joined Trains Not Freeways to address the reality of oil's demise. Fuel switching will not solve the oil problem. Nevertheless, most big environmental and transportation groups are counting on greater fuel economy or alternative fuels. Countless local communities have campaigned successfully for mass transit. It is incumbent upon us all to take this to a higher level-thus the national focus of Trains Not Freeways. The subsidies to fossil fuels, particularly to maintain cheap gasoline prices, are massive-Trains Not Freeways seeks to redirect transportation priorities.
