During the prior winter the entire world was thrown into a state of emergency. Millions were going to die from a new mutant virus. Scientists slaved day and night to produce the cure, while people everywhere huddled by their television sets, waiting for the latest breaking news. They called it a pandemic. They called it the Swine Flu.
Today, the term "Swine Flu" probably seems dated and irrelevant. However, it was barely a year ago that medical and media organizations claimed this virus was a disastrous threat to all humans. The World Health Organization declared the swine flu (also known as the H1N1 virus) to be a phase 6 global pandemic.
As the months following the outbreak passed, people began to realize that the sky was not falling after-all. Despite all the hype, the alleged swine flu failed to do much. In fact, there were fewer worldwide deaths resulting from the 2009 Swine Flu and seasonal flu combined, than those caused by the unremarkable flu of 2008. Many health professionals were relieved. The Director of Student Health at the University of California at Santa Barbara, Elizabeth Downing, expressed relief that the swine flu pandemic didn't live up to its name. She said, "In the end there were certainly some very, very unfortunate deaths but not anything near what we thought would happen."
While everyone can be glad that the pandemic of the century failed to occur, a great disservice has still been done to our nation and our community. Billions of taxpayer dollars were spent, while millions of Americans, including approximately 1,800 students at just one school, UCSB, who received H1N1 vaccinations, have had their health put in serious jeopardy. This threat to health was due to the haphazard policies of national and global government organizations. Organizations, including the FDA, WHO and CDC, aided in the distribution of H1N1vaccinations which were never proven safe.
On July 15, 2009 Margaret Chan, director of the World Health Organization, told reporters for the Guardian, "There's no vaccine. One should be available soon, in August. But having a vaccine available is not the same as having a vaccine that has been proven safe. Clinical trial data will not be available for another two to three months." Margaret Chan's words sparked the attention of one concerned Californian doctor. Dr. Tim O'Shea is the author of Vaccination is Not Immunization. Dr. O'Shea states that in his experience, clinical trials and analysis for vaccinations usually take a year or more before a vaccination can be declared safe. Needless to say, he was shocked when only five weeks after clinical testing began the FDA approved the H1N1 vaccine.
Each of the five clinical trials which were being administered to test the safety and effectiveness of the H1N1 vaccine were scheduled to be completed in April of 2010. In light of this fact, the FDA approval of H1N1 vaccines came in October 2009. The public unrest about distribution of an untested vaccine was addressed by Professor Sir Gordon Duff, a co-chairman of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, who told the UK Press Association "We are content that benefits far outweigh the risks." Unfortunately, this assurance of confidence changes nothing, and comes from a scientist who apparently trusts his own gut feeling over clinical testing.
Government organizations clearly felt a great rush to make the H1N1 vaccine accessible to the public; with the rationale that an untested vaccine was less threatening than the H1N1 virus. Regardless, the fact that these vaccines were being administered after being tested for only six short weeks seems absurd to Dr. O'Shea. He believes that the claim the vaccine was tested, produced and delivered in six weeks is "physically impossible." Dr. O'Shea suggests that many of the vaccines, which were distributed to the public in October, were likely old stockpiles of vaccines for the avian flu, which occurred in 2004.
The avian flu episode went just like that of the swine flu. The media helped create a global panic, vaccines were administered, profits were made, and as quickly as it arrived, it passed. The avian scare may have disappeared; however, the unused stockpiles of vaccines were likely kept in storage. Vaccines can actually store for decades, thanks to certain powerful preservatives. The only way to keep a product free from any biological contamination for decades is to include chemicals which are so toxic so that no living organism can withstand them. A trip to the Isla Vista Medical Clinic near UCSB revealed some of the not-so-well known components of what is being injected into your arm. A specification sheet that came with the H1N1 vaccine claimed that each dose contains 100mcg of formaldehyde and 25mcg of Thimerosal, "a mercury derivative." Formaldehyde may seem bad enough (yes, that same revolting substance that preserved dead frogs in biology class), but what about mercury? Mercury, according to Dr. O'Shea, is the 3rd most toxic substance known to man.
So what does mercury have to do with avian flu vaccines? Dr. O'Shea points out that modern medicine has been producing vaccines free of mercury for years. So why, when a new vaccine is being produced for immediate use, would manufacturers need to include the preservative Thimerosal. The answer may simply be that these vaccines are years old, being sold as a way to minimize losses and maximize profits. Dr. O'Shea's theory is not without precedent. In September 2009, a major American pharmaceutical company, Baxter, made global news when it was exposed by the Czech government for illegally distributing what was claimed to be swine flu vaccines to 18 countries. The vaccines were shown to actually contain the avian flu virus.
As the evidence piles and the skepticism mounts, one may come to ask if any of the swine flu propaganda is true. Was there really an outbreak of a deadly virus? To answer this question there are some facts which must be considered. On October 8, 2009 the CDC claimed that 99% of the flu cases in the U.S. at the time were swine flu; a claim which Dr. O'Shea believes to be "completely unsupportable." To clarify his stance, Dr. O'Shea explains the CDC's methods of diagnosis. At the time the CDC instructed physicians to diagnose anyone with symptoms of Influenza type A, as having the swine flu. There was no need for physicians to even see the patients to give such a diagnosis according to Dr. O'Shea, who claims that at least half of the recorded H1N1 cases were diagnosed over the phone. He goes on to point out that there are hundreds of known strains of Influenza A and beyond that over 700 known strains of H1N1 (a subtype of Influenza A). While this is the case, he states that the CDC, "never decided on which of the 700 strains of H1N1 was causing this disease." Conclusively, Dr. O'Shea asserts that, "The swine flu phenomenon was the artificial recategorization of cases of regular flu that exist all over the world for the purpose of marketing and selling a vaccine."
The avian flu came and went, as did the swine flu. With the help of our own government's agencies, funded by American tax dollars, and promoted by major media outlets, pharmaceutical companies made billions last year selling H1N1 vaccines to our nation. It has happened before and it will happen again. As long as the public buys into such trickery, history will repeat itself. This cycle of deceitful profiteering will only end when individuals relinquish their blind faith and start asking questions.
